Adopted in 1348; The Royal Standard of England was adopted in the 14th century, with earlier use as a standard in the religious crusades to the Holy Land dating to the 11th and 12th centuries. The flag features a red cross of St. George, patron Saint of England, centered on a white field. The cross is a central part of the British Naval ensign and the Union Jack (with the cross of St Patrick and the cross of St Andrew, patron Saints of Ireland and Scotland). Early use in the New World was in 1497 with the explorations of John Cabot to Newfoundland, and the early 1600's with the colonies at Jamestown and Plymouth. The flag was replaced in 1606 with the adoption of the Union Flag or King's Colors.
