Department of State Flags
About the US State Department
The US State Department was the first federal government department established in 1789 as the Department of Foreign Affairs. The primary goal of this department was to help with negotiating agreements and treaties between the US and foreign nations. Eventually, it would be responsible for keeping the Great Seal of the United States, managing the Mint, and census-taking.
This particular department has played a critical role in various significant events throughout US history, including the country’s expansion westward, the development of the nation’s borders, and the US’s establishment as one of the Western Hemisphere’s leading republics. Throughout the early 1900s, the department grew significantly, going from 91 employees to 708 by 1940.
Currently, the State Department has an office of Foreign Service, which is responsible for helping manage global diplomatic programs, along with the Department of Commerce, the Department of Agriculture, the US Agency for International Development, and the US Information Agency.
There are many flags that represent the US State Department, including those for the:
- Secretary of State
- Deputy Secretary of State
- Chief of Mission
- Foreign Service Officer
- Under Secretaries
As with other types of US flags, any State Department flag must undergo proper disposal, and individuals and entities may not use the Department of State seal for any unofficial purposes without the department’s direct approval. Individuals must also report any instances of misuse to the Office of the Inspector General, Office of Investigations (OIG/INV).
US State Department Flags & Characteristics
The different State Department flags include the following:
- Secretary of State. This flag features the US national coat of arms encircled against a blue background with a 5-point white star in each corner of the flag.
- Chief of Mission. The Chief of Mission (Ambassador) flag includes the coat of arms in its center surrounded by 13 white stars against a blue background.
- Chief of Diplomatic Mission. This flag design is similar to that of the Chief of Mission flag, only it features a white background with a ring of blue stars. Entities flying this flag could include Diplomatic Chiefs of Mission of the EU, UN, NATO, and the Organization of American States.
- Consular Flags. The Institute of Heraldry (TIOH) has specifications in place for these flags, which include 13 white stars in a ring around a white “C” against a navy blue field.
- Diplomatic Officer/Foreign Officer State Department Flags. The Department of State has allowed for the use of these flags since 1946. Their intended use is on automobiles carrying accredited foreign service officers who represent the Chief of Mission at official and ceremonial events. The Chief of Mission may also warrant the use of this flag for personal safety or emergency situations.
Material and Durability
Like other types of regulation flags, US State Department flags are made of either Nylon or Rayon for indoor use and strictly Nylon for outdoor use. These materials ensure the flags remain vibrant and resistant to harsh weather conditions. For increased durability, flags also include four rows of fly-end stitching along with double-stitched edges, which help minimize wear and tear. Interior formal flags can include appliqued and embroidered designs.
Size and Dimensions
The specific size of the flag will depend on the individual flag. For instance, Chief of Mission flags must be 3′ x 5’8″, with matching sizes for indoor use. Other types of military and government flags have specifications of 3′ x 4′ or 4’4″ x 5’6″. Regardless of the size, they are constructed with extreme attention to detail to ensure consistency in quality and design.
