(5) Adopted in 1348; The Royal Standard of England was adopted in the 14th century, with earlier use as a standard in the religious crusades to the Holy Land dating to the 11th and 12th centuries. The flag features a red cross of St. George, patron Saint of England, centered on a white field. The cross is a central part of the British Naval ensign and the Union Jack (with the cross of St Patrick and the cross of St Andrew, patron Saints of Ireland and Scotland). The arms feature a woman in green dress, Erin, the female personification of Ireland, standing beside a yellow harp and embracing a large dark cross with her right arm.
