History and Significance Behind the DOD Military Service Flag
Each military branch has its own flags with corresponding colors and seals. Although the U.S. Army dates back to 1775, it wasn’t until much later that the various military branches developed official flags, as follows:
- U.S. Marine Corps Flag: 1939
- U.S. Air Force Flag: 1951
- U.S. Army Flag: 1956
- U.S. Navy Flag: 1959
- U.S. Coast Guard Flag (current version): 1964
- U.S. Space Force Flag: 2020
In addition to identifying a particular branch of service, the military uses flags for communication, to indicate rank, and to show respect for the military and commemorate its service members.
Defense Department Military American Flag Use Guidelines
The Department of Defense (DOD) has set rules surrounding flying flags on military bases and government properties, particularly involving when to fly them and how to position them. The Trademark Licensing Program Office for each branch of the military manages Military Service marks, which cover both headquarters’ trademarks as well as unit insignia. Before using certain military initials, coats of arms, emblems, and other symbols and related identifiers, users will need to obtain permission.
Flag Display Permissions
Flags embody the military’s history and mission, and the DOD has specific display guideline requirements and exceptions when a flag is presented in the following events:
- Ceremonies
- Special occasions
- Academia settings
- Patriotic special events
On special occasions, including parades, funerals, and school assemblies, color guards should hold a flag’s staff in the vertical position for the Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard flags. They may slightly incline the United States Army flag’s pole in a forward direction.
Order of Precedence of Flags
Dated August 18, 2020, the Air Force Instruction 34-1201 specifies how departmental flags should be displayed, in order of military flag precedence. From left to right, the proper flag order is as follows:
- U.S. Flag
- State Flag
- Army Flag
- Marine Corps Flag
- Navy Flag
- Air Force Flag
- Coast Guard Flag
- Space Force Flag
