Additional Information N/A The western region is today predominantly ethnically Ukrainian, with southern and eastern portions ethnically Russian, along with a Turk (Tatar) minority. Roman Catholic, Russian Orthodox and Tatar Muslim religions are part of the historic ethnic divisions and rivalries. Crimea was at the center of a three year war beginning in 1853 with Napoleonic France, Great Britain, the Kingdom of Sardinia, and the Ottoman Empire defeating Russia. From 1917-1991 Ukraine was part of Soviet Russia with the exception of Nazi Germany occupation during WWII. The region remains geographically strategic. Conflicting political and economic views of EU or Russian alignment continue to cause strife.
