U.S. state flags honor each region’s unique history and convey meaningful information about their values. At Embassy Flag, we offer flags for each state in America, all expertly crafted with durability in mind. Below, you can learn more about the interesting history of U.S. state flags, as well as information on the types we offer.
History of U.S. State Flags
State flags of the U.S. have a long and interesting history. Many of them were created for the 1893 World’s Fair, which was held in Chicago. During that time, there were 44 states in the Union, and each wanted to demonstrate their uniqueness at the fair. Later on, many of those flags were formally adopted and recognized as the state’s official flag.
Other U.S. states have had flags that date back to the earliest days of American history. For example, while Rhode Island’s state flag was officially adopted in 1877, it has been flown since the 1600s. Connecticut’s flag was created during the Revolutionary War, although it wasn’t formally adopted until 1897. In other cases, flags have been created more recently. For example, Mississippi updated its flag in 2021 and several others have updated their designs since the mid-20th century.
Importance of U.S. State Flags
Before the U.S. annexed the various states, several of them were territories with their own laws. As such, many state flags serve as a lasting reminder of the territory’s history before it became a part of the United States.
Today, each state flag serves as an extension of our nation’s history, and flying them demonstrates respect both for the state and the entire country. For that reason, it’s important that each state flag be manufactured with care and feature accurate colors; correct size measurements; and long-lasting, quality materials.

Embassy Flag offers an extensive selection of American-made U.S. state and territory flags. Our product range includes everything from durable outdoor flags to extreme wear products, boat flags, parade flags, and much more.
Outdoor United States State and Territory Flags
Made from nylon and finished with a canvas heading, our outdoor state and territory flags feature two brass grommets on the hoist side, two rows of stitching on the top and bottom sides, and four rows of stitching on the fly side. They attach to flagpoles using a halyard and flag snaps, or to smaller poles with flag fasteners. Outdoor state and territory flags are available in the following dimensions:
- 2×3 feet
- 3×5 feet
- 4×6 feet
- 5×8 feet
- 6×10 feet
Extra-Large Outdoor Nylon State and Territory Flags
Our extra-large outdoor state flags come in 8×12 feet, with certain options also available in 10×15 feet and 12×18 feet. These flags feature a #10 white nylon rope that is sewn into a 2-inch cotton polyester blend header. They also include galvanized metal thimble ends crimped to the rope ends for attaching to flag snaps, as well as an additional brass grommet in the middle of the heading for a third flag snap to improve stability on the halyard.
Extreme Wear Woven Polyester Outdoor State and Territory Flags
Extreme wear flags are constructed from an open weave two-ply woven polyester known by the trade names Valley Forge Flag Spectra-Pro and Eder Flag Mfg. Poly-Max. Compared to traditional nylon, this long-wearing flag material decreases fabric stress and reduces the risk of outside fly-end shredding in high-wind environments. This makes it a great choice for everyday, long-term display. We offer extreme wear flags in 3×5 feet, 4×6 feet, and 5×8 feet only.
USA State and Territory Boat Flags
Our boat flags are made from nylon and feature two brass grommets. They are available in 12×18 inches.
Indoor/Parade State and Territory Flags
Nylon indoor parade state flags come in 3×5 feet and 4×6 feet options. They have a flannel-lined pole sleeve with a tab sewn inside that attaches to the top of the flagpole to prevent the flag from sliding down. These flags are made to order in the USA and come with the option of a 2-inch gold rayon fringe. We also offer:
- Appropriately sized flag poles in polished hardwood and gold or silver anodized aluminum
- Indoor floor stands in weighted ABS plastic or cast metal in brass, chrome, or gilt finishes
- Flagpole finials in ABS plastic and both chrome or brass metal finishes
